11+ Admissions Process

Useful Sites

The information below will take you to various sites to help you choose if the Grammar is the right school for your child, how to register for the 11+ Exam, and useful resources such as exam papers, and how to find dates for you diary.

Colchester Grammar Schools

There are two grammar schools in Colchester. The Colchester Royal Grammar School (for boys) and Colchester County High School for Girls

Here you will find the school prospectus, dates for open days, and a wealth of information to give you an idea what the schools are about.

Application Process and Past Papers

Both school sites have an admissions policy, but this policy is really set by the Consortium of Secondary Schools in Essex (CSSE) whose website is a great place to learn more about the exam and the application process. The 11+ Entrance Exam page has free familiarisation/ past papers, useful exam preparation advice and also key dates for your diary. The CSSE site is well worth reading through.

Admissions Process

Admissions for children starting in Year 7 begins with registration when your child is in Year 5. Registration opens in May, and can be done from the CSSE website. Visiting the school on open days in the summer is really useful. Exams take place in September when your child starts Year 6. 11+ Exam results are made available within a few weeks. You will then have time to apply for a place in October as part of the secondary schools admissions process.

The forms for children living in Essex can be found on the Essex County Council site. Most children will have their place decided by the exam results alone, so the schools will accept applicants regardless of their location. Below I’ve set out a rough guide of the key dates you will need to look out for. The dates change slightly each year, so be sure you confirm the process relevant to you, and follow the specific dates each year using the Grammar School websites, CSSE site, and guidance from your own County Council.
